2012 Training Walks

September 8 – 20 miles
I was dreading this one a little bit.  I have done every long on my own but I was getting in my head about this one.  I also was walking in areas of Wisconsin Rapids that I wasn’t very familiar with.  Thankfully, Jeremy plotted out a perfect route for me with just the right mix of residential areas, busy streets (with options for food and bathrooms), and even a stretch along the Wisconsin River.  And it was a beautiful day.  So it was a good walk and I finished knowing I could have kept going.  Last training walk of the year!  Let’s go to Door County!

September 1 – 10 miles
We were home visiting my parents so I did ten miles in Germantown.  I didn’t plan a route and just used my pedometer to keep track of distance.  I walked to my old middle school and around neighborhoods that I spent a lot of time in as a teenager.  It was a nice trip down memory lane and even better when my mom joined me for the last mile!  Thankfully I didn’t feel anything after getting done with 10 miles.  My hips didn’t feel out of whack, my back didn’t hurt, and my feet were fine.  Love it!

August 25 – 18 miles
This was hopefully the last HOT walk of the year.  I started at about 6:30am but it was already blazing by about 11.  I got the miles in, but I wasn’t hungry or thirsty the entire time and I just crashed when I got home.  I just didn’t feel good at the end.  If there was any chance of it being hot in Door County in September, I’d try to figure out what I did wrong.  Thankfully, too hot is never a problem at Challenge Walk.

August 11 – 16 miles
Oh this was a beautiful walk.  The temperature was perfect and in the 60s/low 70s.  It was pretty sunny but my route had plenty of shade.  I got tired around mile 12 but eventually got a second wind and made it to the end with energy to spare.  I was looking forward to this walk after a long week and it did not disappoint!
Route: Wingra, John Nolan, Cap City Trail, Mifflin, a couple laps around Farmers’ Market, Southwest Trail, Midvale (hill!), Nakoma, Arboretum.  (Loved finishing after the Arb.)
Song of the walk: Some Nights by Fun.  No idea who these guys are but they gave me a great boost during mile 15!
August 5 – 3 miles
This walk was just not meant to be.  It was another day of trying to do too much.  I did three miles after church in between loads of laundry.  Then I was starving so I ate lunch. I was going to go back out at noon but it was so sunny and hot and I just did not have the motivation to do another 9.  So I kicked back in a shady patch of grass with my kindle a few kitties.  I’m ok skipping walks on low-mileage weekends so I’m not going to beat myself up about it.

July 28 – 14 miles
This was a partly fun and mostly ridiculous walk day.  Jeremy and I started the day in Milwaukee where we did the three mile Brewers charities walk.  (I love this walk because you get to take pictures with racing sausages and get to walk right on the field in Miller Park.  And this year we got to go in the dugout too!)  Then we drove back to Madison and Jeremy dropped me off at my condo at which point I walked home.  Taking the long way of course.  It was a very sunny day but some clouds popped through few times.  I also had to get to Jeremy’s by a certain time which led to some extra clock watching.  Thankfully it all worked out and I got all 14 miles in.

July 20 – 7.5 miles
Ok.  So technically not a training walk, but my pedometer said we walked 7.5 miles while in Cincinnati.  That included walking over the Ohio River (twice) and a few laps around the Great American Ball Park.

July 14 – 12 miles
I started at 6:15am and had clouds the entire time!  It was great!  I got 9.5 miles before my legs started feeling it which tells me I’m getting back into shape.  I’ll take it! Route: Wingra, John Nolan, Baldwin, Gorham, Langdon, Lakeshore Path, Park

July 12 – 2ish miles
I forgot my pedometer so not sure of the exact mileage, but it was a beautiful walk throught the arb.  And not hot!

June 30 – 10 miles
I started at 6:45 and was done by 10 to avoid the heat.  I didn’t drink nearly enough water though because I had a monster headache for the rest of the afternoon.  Other learning of the walk: must get new shoes.  Route: Park, Regent, Monroe, Nakoma, Arb, Wingra, Park.

June 25 – 3ish miles
Took a long walk to the grocery store and back.

June 24 – 8 miles
It was hot this week so I didn’t do any walks during the week.  Today, it was cloudy for the first five miles.  It even drizzled for a bit at the start.  But then the sun came blazing for the last hour or so.  (I should have put sunscreen on.  I have some pink shoulders now.)  I walked to the capitol, around the square and State Street, and and then back.  I love downtown on Sunday mornings.

June 15 – 8 miles
Typically I would have done this on a Saturday without any problem, but I was heading out of town.  So I decided to walk on Friday night.  After dinner. And laundry.  I started at 8 outside and then moved to the gym once it got dark.  I got done around 10:30.  Thankfully I had the last 3 innings of the Brewer game to watch towards the end of my walk!

June 12 – 3.1 miles
An absolutely beautiful night to take a walk through the arb.

June 5 – 3 miles
Took the long way to my polling place.

June 2 – 7.5 miles
Walked to pick up my car from my office parking lot.  Beautiful day for a walk. Mistake: Gooey cinnamon roll was delicious but made for a mess as I walked.  Song of the walk: Call Me Maybe.  I fully admit a woman my age should not like that song, but it’s fantastic.

May 28 – 2 miles
Checking out a new route.

May 26 – 6 miles
Raining. Treadmill. Looong time since I’ve been to the gym.  Felt like a really long time to get the miles in. Forgetting my ear buds didn’t help.  Thank goodness for closed captioning.
