When I started training for my first Challenge Walk MS, a three-day, 50-mile, non-competitive walk, I had no idea what I was doing. I wasn’t an athlete by any definition and knew nothing about training. I remember going for my first five-mile walk and was shocked when I finally hit 2.5 miles because I felt so far from home. I couldn’t imagaine walking all that way back. I remember my first eight-mile walk that included me laying flat on my back on a patch of grass a half mile from home because I brought no water, food, money to buy anything, or phone to call anyone. (I did eventually make it home.) I also didn’t know how in the world I was going to raise the money necessary to participate in the event. But I did end up completing all 50 miles and raising the money. I’m now preparing for my fifth Challenge Walk MS. I share this blog in the hopes of sharing some of my learnings with others.
I don’t have MS but my dad does. That’s the reason I walk. Long walks often lead to lots of thoughts and this blog allows me to put those thoughts “on paper.”
