& Nancy

It’s that time of year again! Preparations are underway for the 2013 Challenge Walk MS!

This will be my sixth year walking 50 miles over three days in Door County in September.  My friend, Amy, is also back this year.  We are excited to once again walk to raise awareness and money for the fight against multiple sclerosis.  We walk for my dad, Marty, who has MS.  Our team name also includes Clyde, my dad’s cane.  The fact that my dad named is cane gives you an idea of how he lives with MS every day.  But our team name will also have a new addition for this year.

My mom and dad have been married for 41 years.  For 16 of those years, MS has been a part of their relationship as well.  I think it’s fair to say that MS has brought some challenges, but they have learned how to deal with it.  I live an hour and a half away so I don’t see these challenges every day.  But my mom does.  When my mom recently had a health scare of her own, I got a glimpse of these challenges.

My dad called to say that my mom was in the hospital.  By the time I got there, we were all thankful that she was doing really well but she was going to stay overnight for observation.  After asking my mom how she was doing, she immediately started talking about what I needed to do at home to help my dad.  I wrote down the list of pills.  I got an overview of their daily routine.  I was thankful to hear that my dad would be able to give himself his shot on his own that night.

But the list of things to do was minor compared to the feeling that too much felt out of my control.  I was worried.  I didn’t want anything to happen.  The following morning, I was never so grateful to hear Clyde moving along the tile in the bathroom.  And in that moment I developed a new appreciation for what my mom does every day.  Over the past 16 years my mom has learned how to become my dad’s caregiver and live with the worry that MS brings to every day.  It’s a role that she was not expecting to have in the same way that my dad never expected to have MS.

So this year, I’m walking in honor of my mom and all of the other caregivers out there who help make living with MS easier.  We are adding my mom’s name to our team name this year to honor all that she does for my dad and our family.  When we talk about raising money for a cure and for new treatments, it’s not just for the people who have MS.  It is also for the people whose lives also changed when they heard a doctor tell their loved one, “You have MS.”  A world free of MS is not only a world free of the symptoms of MS that can be seen, but also all of the worries and extra responsibilities that come with it.

Once again, I’m asking for people to join us in this fight.  If you would like to make a financial contribution, You can also contribute online at main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/jillh2013.

Two days done

Second day of Challenge Walk is always toughest for me. My legs are already tired from the first day. Mentally, it’s hard to think about another 30 miles after I’m already tired from the first 20. And the second half of the day is especially tough because my body is telling me to stop and it’s hard to wrap my head around walking for another two hours! Everyone’s also a lot more spread out on the route so it’s not uncommon to not see anyone in front of you or behind you. It requires some preparation to get through.

Day 2 started on the bus with people telling stories of the second day last year. It rained. All. Day. Thankfully, today was bright and sunny and not too chilly. With the exception of a one-minute downpour at mile 16 it stayed that way. The only thing we had to deal with was wind. It wasn’t constant, but there were stretches where we walking directly into the wind. Jeremy called at one point and heard nothing but wind. Thankfully the sun made it more bearable and we really couldn’t complain about the weather after last year.

I was excited since I found out on Thursday night that the brewer game was on at noon today. Having a game to listen to would make the afternoon go quickly. Jeremy texted me around 11 and let me know that the badger game bumped the brewer game. I would have been bummed but I was lucky enough to meet Jul at about mile 8. Jul did the walk last year with her daughter but was on her own this year. We both walked at the same pace and stuck together the rest of the day. Having Jul to chat with really made the afternoon go quickly. And it provided a nice distraction from the feeling that my feet turned into bricks. 🙂

I crossed the finish line about 2:30. Jeremy and I went out for pizza and got back to the hotel around 5. My plan was to take a quick nap and then head to the dinner/program at 6:15. Despite attempts to wake me up, I didn’t wake up until 8. Oops. Thankfully I made it up in time for my 8:30 massage and to find out I won every silent auction item that I bid on. I’m really happy I don’t have to load the car tomorrow! Overall I’m feeling good. My back is fine. I have a few more blisters on my feet but nothing I can’t handle. My knees and the tops of my shins are the only things that hurt, but as long as I’m not doing steps I can handle that too. (Our room is on the third floor. The elevator was my friend tonight.) So one more day to go.

Only 10 miles. Time to get some sleep.

You’ll laugh about this one day…

Lots of stories being told on the bus about how miserable day 2 was last year with the rain. Last year at this time the bus was just sort silent as we were watching the rain come down, knowing we’d be walking in it.

Beautiful, sunny Door County morning today!

Day 2 start

I surprisingly am feeling great this morning.  I say surprisingly because I wasn’t feeling great last night. I had two little blisters on two little toes and it was enough for me to overcompensate and get my knees out of whack. Nothing serious, but my left knee was throbbing yesterday and my right knee was clicking more than usual. In additon to walking much slower than usual (my dad would have gotten a kick out of that) I had a monster of a headache all night. So after dinner I just laid down and actually crashed around 8.  Though Jeremy did wake me up for the 9th inning of the Brewer game. Which was awesome.

Thankfully, I’m not feeling anything this morning, which is precisely how one wants to feel when there is another 30 miles to go.  Headache is gone (must drink more water today) and my little toes are wrapped up and hopefully won’t bug me too much. (People walk with much worse than what I’m dealing with.)

Weather today should be clear of rain but windy. Weathermen were completely off yesterday so we’ll see.

I gotta get my shoes on. Here we go.
